[From Introduction] In my visits to Robert Motherwell's studio in Greenwich, Connecticut I was always struck by the amount of small works Bob had hanging near his work space. These thematic paintings and drawings would be a constant reference from him and like a composer, from these small works, Motherwell would create visual variations on a completely new scale or medium and give these works a true sense of originality. This exhibition tries in its very modest way, to show the working arrangement Motherwell had within his oeuvre. With works spanning fifty years and from some of his most recognizable series, one can see how Motherwell re-worked these themes that became the core elements of his visual language. We are also privileged to include in this exhibition Motherwell's last work from 1991 and his "Dedalus" sketchbook from 1982, two sketchbooks filled with what Motherwell referred to as "artful doodles" created in response to James Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses.
